Early Childhood
A foundational feast for our littlest learners….
Overview and Philosophy
Augustine Classical Academy follows the time-tested three stage approach of Classical Christian Education, explained by Dorothy Sayers in her essay “The Lost Tools of Learning.” This time-tested approach to learning that teaches “with the grain” of natural child development. The first stage of the Trivium is the “Poll Parrot,” or what we call Grammar School. In this phase, children excel at and delight in collecting facts, learning the names for things, and memorizing. This comes naturally to young children and it lays a foundation for later phases of learning and development.
Our early childhood philosophy could be described as “Pre-Poll Parrot,” or a warmup for the classical model of education. We teach with the grain by learning fun songs and poems, and quenching students’ thirst to collect facts and name things. Students engage with rich literature and stories, always coming back to God’s story.
We believe a child’s first school experience is extremely important in shaping his/her attitude and approach toward learning. Our teachers recognize each child as a unique person created in God’s image. They are committed to helping each child grow spiritually, mentally, socially, emotionally and physically.
Environment
Augustine Classical Preschool (ACP) is a joyful place of guided discovery where we foster curiosity and love of learning. Classrooms are calm and the teachers are in control. Our learning environment provides familiar routines and clear expectations, with a balance of teacher-led and child-initiated activities.
You will see children popping with excitement to share connections they are making and new skills they are developing. “Mrs. Dernlan, this picture looks like pointillism - it’s made with dots!” “We sang the hymn of the trimester at my church!” “Hey, Mrs. Chacon, I zipped my jacket all by myself!” or “Look, this book has a picture of the Eiffel Tower!”
Kinesthetic movement is built into routines so children are active and engaged while learning. Biblical truth is woven throughout our days and discussions, both planned and spontaneous.
Developmentally Appropriate Teaching Methods
“Developmentally appropriate” is a term that refers to choosing and adjusting curriculum and teaching methods in order to meet each child where he or she is developmentally as opposed to a cookie-cutter approach, expecting that all students reach every milestone at the same time. Augustine Classical Preschool (ACP) structures classrooms by age group to help us provide the best learning environment and developmentally appropriate activities for all of our students. Our teachers also differentiate instruction, making adjustments within the class to ensure each student is engaged and learning.
